Coughton Court 2002 - The Historic Show by Matthew Smith
This was the first year I had attended the now annual Historic Show. However it was a toss up against watching England in the World Cup and Glastonbury. Considering I've slept in three feet of mud at Glastonbury before and I don't like football, the historic show won. (As if it wouldn't!!!)
The event actually started on the Friday night with a cruise around the local area. Unfortunately Sam and I couldn't make it until the AGM on the Saturday evening. After a pleasant meal and chat we, the four of us that is, Charles, Jackie, Sam and myself decided a cruise was the order of the night, seen as the weather was so nice. The cruise lasted till the next pub (about 500 yards), not really a cruise as such but fun anyway. Jackie and Sam were more impressed with Mr Darcy on the TV.

After a great nights sleep in a hotel it was onward to the show. By the time I arrived the show ground was filling up nicely with a considerable queue building. I was most impressed that I was allowed to park my bug with the other in the line-up. Even though it isn't a 6 volter, with the engine lid shut you can't tell. The organisation was excellent although a little trouble did occur on the gate, this was soon sorted out.
Having never been to the show before I didn't really know what to expect as far as the show cars were concerned. There was an eclectic mix of stock and custom. There were even some pre restoration cars lined-up. I think it is nice to see them before a full restoration, and also it shows how robust Volkswagens are.

There where also some great split-vans and type 3's on show. The traders were also good with Status on hand selling new parts, along with a lot of second hand swopmeeters. I did manage to get some NOS heater channel bottom plates that we have been after for a while for Sam's oval, because some one welded the body to the chassis.
After tea in the grounds café and another wander around the show ground it was time to leave for home and head for Bradford for our next meeting at eight o'clock.
A great show that also gave me chance to speak face to face with a lot of members who I had previously only spoken to on the phone. And, more importantly the chance to see your cars.
